An Exceptional S.T.E.A.A.M Experience!
The Bessie Coleman Youth Drone Preparation & Training Academy

Named after and dedicated to her legacy as the first African American and Native American woman pilot, Bessie Coleman, Save Our Schools for Our Kids Foundation of Connecticut presents “The Bessie Coleman Youth Drone Preparation & Training Academy” (Known here-after as the Bessie Coleman Youth Drone Academy).
Referred to as small, unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), the aim of this academy is to provide Hartford youth ages 9 –17 a STEM career pathway and business development platform of learning for commercial drone/unmanned aerial vehicle skills development and the opportunity to obtain their FAA certification for youth sixteen years of age and up.

At the heart of our mission to inspire, equip, and uplift socially and economically at-risk youth, the Bessie Coleman Youth Drone Academy provides an innovative and transformative learning experience that combines cutting-edge technology with real-world career preparation. Designed for youth aged 9 and older, this dynamic program delivers hands-on training in drone piloting and aerial photography/videography—skills that are rapidly growing in demand across industries.
Led by certified professional drone pilots and experienced drone photographers, students will receive in-depth instruction covering both commercial and recreational drone operations. From learning how to fly drones with precision to capturing cinematic aerial footage, participants will explore real-world applications in sectors like agriculture, construction, real estate, media, emergency response, environmental monitoring, and more.
Our academy not only exposes youth to high-demand STEM career paths, but also prepares them to take the FAA Part 107 Aeronautical Knowledge Exam—the required certification to operate drones commercially in the United States. By the time participants turn 16, they will be equipped and eligible to pass the "Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG)" exam, unlocking access to full- or part-time job opportunities or the tools to launch their own drone-based business.
In alignment with Save Our Schools 4Our Kids’ broader vision, the Bessie Coleman Youth Drone Academy focuses outreach on underserved and minority youth—ensuring equitable access to next-generation skills and economic opportunities. Whether students pursue drone piloting for personal growth, freelance work, or professional careers, this academy builds a future-ready mindset and a strong foundation for entrepreneurial and workforce success.
